Crybaby
Eleri Edwards
Crybaby is an animated short film about autism and, more importantly, negative internal voices.
It is a 11 minute animation centred on 24-year-old character Carys, who is finally moving out of her parents' house. Surrounded by objects, she reflects on her childhood and wonders... I always felt excluded, struggled to develop friends... why did no one notice my autism?'
From primary school onwards Carys tried to escape into her drawings; unfortunately, those scribbles have now grown up, and are full of criticism and aggression, scream at her things like 'What's wrong with you? Why can't you be good enough... like everyone else?'
For Eleri this project is deeply personal — the themes of the story, the visualisation of the main character's negative internal voice, how she learns to eventually appreciate and care for herself.
