Hand of God
Lily Dorrington
This painting represents the changing autonomy in women's positions in surgical environments across both patient and practitioner perspectives. Traditionally, medical specialties across the board operated paternalistically, with all-male doctors operating in what they believed were patients' 'best interests' in their medical opinion.
Surgeons are generally perceived and evaluated as granting less autonomy to patients, with concerns across the board around clear communication of potential complications and circumstances where errors have been made jeopardising informed consent.
