Lend me a Hand

Georgia Nicolls

Sewing plays a key role in both traditional women's work and in modern surgery - this piece acknowledges that needlework and surgical technique share a common origin. The collaborative nature of the piece, two different female hands operating in two wholly different environments to achieve a common goal, highlights the importance of solidarity between women - the surgeon's hand does not scorn that of the seamstress, but instead the two work together with a common goal to produce a united product. Whilst surgery is traditionally a male speciality, this piece acknowledges that embracing a traditionally masculine, career-driven role does not have to come at the expense of abandoning traditional femininity. There are, as it were, threads that bind us to our past. These same threads can give us the resources we need to be prepared to face our future.
