As a man, I was initially hesitant to add another male voice to conversations about women's experiences. However, I felt compelled — and suitably equipped-to share what I've witnessed of the mistreatment of my female friends. As a medical student, I've often been struck by how both staff and patients treat me differently from my female colleagues. Patients frequently assume that I'm training to be a doctor, while they presume my female peers to be nursing students. Staff, too, have at times regarded me as inherently more competent simply because I am a man. I brought these observations to the following poem to explore how society perceives gender distinctions as inherent and unchangeable as the ways of the universe.
